Set up Google Tag Manager

1. Load the Google Tag Manager interface through either your existing Google account, or by following the Google Marketing Platform Start for free link.

The Start for free link can be found by performing a web search for Google Tag Manager.

2. Add a new account under the Admin tab. Go to Add a New Account > Account Setup, then enter Account Name and Country.

3. Set up a container by creating a Container name, and selecting where to use the container.

You can select web, iOS, Android, server, or AMP as your target platform. The Container name can be the name of your website or company.

4. Agree to the terms of service and create your account to receive a GTM code to install on your website.

Add the first code snippet in the tag of your website. The second code snippet should be added directly after the tag on every page of your site. Alternatively, you can give this code to the front end web development team to insert.

5. If you had a previous GA code snippet installed in the of your website, remove the code, to avoid duplicate data.

6. Go to your dashboard and under Container, select Tags from the left nav options, then click on New to set up your first tag.

A good first tag to create is the Google Analytics Pageview tag, as GTM and GA work together. When assigning a name to the tag, be as specific as possible, for example, GA Pageview – CXL – All. Share your naming conventions with the rest of your GTM-using team.

7. For your new tag Universal Analytics, enter your Google Analytics Tracking ID, found under GA Admin > Property Settings, select Page View for Track Type, select where you want the tag to fire, and Create Tag.

If you plan to use Google’s remarketing features, click Enable Display Advertising Features under ConfigureTag. To collect all data, select All Pages for the Fire On property.

8. Preview your changes before publishing the tag to ensure that your site works normally and the tag exists on every page.

With the GA Pageview tag for example, when you open your site in the same browser the GTM Tags Summary preview box will list Tags Fired On This Page: Bounce Exchange.

9. Publish your tag by clicking the Publish button in the top, right-hand corner of the page.

10. Test that the tag is being tracked properly by heading to GA and looking at the available data.
