Improve filter usability

1. Offer multiple filtering options, using the most popular characteristics of your products as filters, to make finding specific products easier.

Add a price range filter for users who are sensitive to prices. Check your search box history to find common terms used by customers when browsing for products, and incorporate the suitable ones in your filters. For example, if customers search for a specific RAM size for laptops, include this characteristic as a filter.

2. Give customers the option to both sort and filter to help them find the products they want quicker and easier.

Add a sort function that allows customers to sort by Price, Rating, or Date Added (newest first).

3. Determine what matters the most about specific products and use highly relevant filters based on product features.

For example, if you sell different lamps, consider adding filters like bulb size, color, or material to help narrow down search results for customers.

4. Use survey tools like SurveyMonkey or heatmap tools like Hotjar to determine which filters are the most important for your users.

Remove irrelevant and rarely used filters and adjust popular ones accordingly. In Hotjar, check which filters get the most clicks and position those higher on the page.

5. Display the most popular filters at the top of your product list or on the left side as collapsible tabs.

Show the total number of products for each filter. Collapse long filter lists after 10 filter values and use a see more button to clearly indicate more options. Use a plugin like WOOF – Products Filter for WooCommerce or ask your web developer.

6. Use checkboxes to allow customers to select more than one filter and allow users to clear all filters with a single click.

7. Use sticky filters that stay visible as customers scroll through the page to allow customers to access them regardless of where they are on the page.

Do this if you use endless scrolling with a load more button for your product lists.

8. Separate each filter selection with an action in browser history to allow users to use the back button to undo filter selections and increase usability.

9. Auto-refresh search results after a filter is selected or deselected to continually update filter selections.
