Use five-second tests

1. Define your five-second test’s objective and goals.

2. Choose the section of your website or design you want to test.

3. Write about 3-5 open-ended, non-leading questions to ask the participant after they have viewed the testing image for five seconds.

4. Define how you’ll measure success for the test. These are your success criteria.

5. Input your testing image and questions into a testing tool.

6. Recruit participants for the test.

7. Share the test with participants. Don't tell them what the questions will be about before the test starts.

8. Compare participants’ answers to your success criteria.

9. Look through answers to find patterns, contradictions, and other insights.

10. Use the insights you found to improve your design’s clarity, messaging, usability, or layout.
