Set up Goals in Google Analytics

1. Open Google Analytics, navigate to the admin area and click on Goals, under the view you wish to use for tracking conversions.

2. Click on the +New Goal button and choose between premade templates and setting a custom goal.

These templates are based on common use cases for goals and assumptions Google has made about your site content, so the list you see may differ from the one below.

3. Select a template that matches your goal, or select Custom to create a custom goal, then click Continue.

4. Name your goal and pick either Destination, Duration, Pages/Screens per session, or Event.

Destination is the most common pick, as it is the choice for lead generation tracking or any type of signup that takes a visitor to a thank you or confirmation page. Destination: Choose a URL, such as a receipt page or a form signup pagem that indicates a visitor has completed an action on your site that has value to you. Duration: Select a length of time in hours, minutes, and seconds. Visitors who stay on-site over this time threshold are counted as completing this goal. Pages/Screens per session: Set a number. Visitors who visit more than this number of pages on a website or screens in a mobile app, are counted as completing this goal. Event: This detailed goal option allows you to specify a category, action, label, and value of an event. Visitors who match the criteria outlined here will count as completing this goal.

5. Enter the goal details: for Destination enter a partial URL, for Duration select a length of time, for Pages/Screens per session, enter a number, and for Event, set the criteria for a meaningful event on your website.

6. Click Verify this Goal before clicking Save, to check that your goal is valid, as you cannot delete a goal once it’s created.

7. Test your goal by completing the conditions you set up, and checking that your action appears in the real-time reports.
